Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach

BeachBoat TripMust-See

Navagio — better known as Shipwreck Beach — is the most photographed spot in Greece: a hidden cove of white pebbles wrapped by 200-metre limestone cliffs, with the rusting hull of the MV Panagiotis half-buried in the sand and impossibly turquoise water lapping around it. It sits on the remote north-west coast of Zakynthos, near Anafonitria.

Can you still visit in 2026? Yes — but it helps to know how. After a 2022 earthquake loosened the cliffs above the cove, landing on the sand was closed for safety, and it remains closed through summer 2026. That hasn't dimmed the experience: boat tours bring you right into the bay beneath the wreck, and the famous clifftop viewpoint above is fully open.

The clifftop viewpoint is where those aerial-looking photos are taken. It's about a 45-minute drive from Zakynthos Town toward Volimes, with a short walk to a fenced platform. Come at sunrise or golden hour for the best light and the smallest crowds — midday sun is when the water glows its brightest turquoise, but the platform is at its busiest.

Seeing it by boat is the other half of the trip, and each departure point offers something different: Porto Vromi is the closest and quickest; Cape Skinari and Agios Nikolaos in the north let you combine Navagio with the Blue Caves in a single day; Makrys Gialos is a popular private speed-boat departure. Full-day tours usually pair the shipwreck with the caves.

One honest tip: access rules can change from year to year, so confirm with your operator the day before whether swimming near the beach is allowed on your trip. Bring water, sun protection and a waterproof phone pouch — there are no facilities at the viewpoint or out on the water.
