Boat TripMust-SeeNatural Wonder

The Blue Caves are a run of sea caves and natural stone arches along the rugged northern tip of Zakynthos, near Cape Skinari. Their name comes from the light: the sun bounces off the white seabed and pale limestone and floods the water with an intense, almost electric blue that reflects onto the cave walls and the underside of the arches.

The colour is at its most vivid in the morning, roughly between 9am and midday, when the sun sits low and the sea is usually calmest — the season runs from May to October. Later in the day the caves are still beautiful, but the blue loses some of its glow, so an early trip is well worth the effort.

The caves are reachable only by boat. Small boats from Cape Skinari are nimble enough to slip inside the caves and under the arches, while larger tour boats leave frequently from Agios Nikolaos port — the big ones give a great view but can't enter the narrowest passages. Because the caves sit right on the north coast, most trips pair them with Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) into a half- or full-day excursion.

When the sea is calm, most tours include a swim stop — and floating in that glowing blue water, with the arch curving just overhead, is the moment everyone remembers. Some operators let you swim right inside the caves, so it's worth checking that a swim stop is part of your trip when you book.

One practical note: the caves need calm water, so a strong northerly wind can make them rough or briefly off-limits — another reason mornings, when the sea is usually settled, are the best time to go. Bring a mask if you have one; the water is clear enough to see straight to the bottom.

Villa Zoi Local Tip

Morning trips before 10am offer the best light. We book the smaller boats that can enter the caves — the big ones can't.
